What to Take on a New Forest Walk

Whether you’re taking a short woodland stroll or planning a longer walk, a little preparation helps you enjoy your visit. Pack for the weather, the route and the people—or dogs—coming with you.

You don’t need to buy everything on this list. Start with what you already own and choose equipment that suits the walks you enjoy.

Comfortable walking footwear

Choose comfortable shoes or boots with a good grip. Consider waterproof footwear for wet conditions and longer walks, and wear socks that fit comfortably without rubbing.

Try unfamiliar footwear on a short walk before committing to a full day out.

A waterproof jacket and an extra layer

Pack a waterproof jacket when rain is possible, along with an extra layer for stops or cooler conditions. A lightweight fleece is useful because you can put it on or take it off as needed.

Check the forecast before leaving and adjust what you carry to suit the day.

Drinking water and a snack

Bring enough drinking water for your planned walk, including extra for anyone accompanying you. A reusable bottle is convenient for shorter outings.

For longer walks, pack a snack or lunch. Take all wrappers and rubbish home with you.

YETI Rambler water bottle — 769ml

The YETI Rambler is an insulated stainless steel water bottle with a 769ml capacity, a straw cap and an easy-carry handle. It is listed as dishwasher-safe for convenient cleaning between walks.

Pack enough water for your route and the weather. For longer walks, you may need to carry additional bottles.

A small daypack

A comfortable daypack keeps your water, clothing and other essentials together while leaving your hands free.

Look for enough room for your belongings, comfortable straps and pockets that make frequently used items easy to reach. A waterproof liner or dry bag can help protect spare clothing and electronics.

SKYSPER hiking daypack — 25 litres

This 25-litre SKYSPER backpack offers space for water, snacks, an extra layer and other walking essentials. It is listed as lightweight and includes a rain cover.

A bag this size may be useful for longer outings or carrying supplies for your dog. For a short stroll, you may only need a smaller bag.

A map and a charged phone

Plan your route before setting off and know how you will return to your car park. Download any maps you intend to use on your phone before leaving.

For longer or unfamiliar routes, consider carrying a paper map as well. A power bank can be useful if you expect to use your phone for navigation throughout the day.

Essentials for walking with a dog

If your dog is joining you, remember:

  • A suitable lead.
  • Fresh water and a portable bowl.
  • Poo bags, with a plan to take used bags to an appropriate bin.
  • A towel for muddy paws before the journey home.

Bring water specifically for your dog rather than relying on finding somewhere to drink along the route.

PetBonus collapsible dog bowls — 600ml, pack of two

A collapsible bowl is useful for offering your dog fresh water during a walk. These PetBonus silicone bowls each hold 600ml and fold down for carrying. The pack includes two carabiners for attaching them to your bag.

The bowls are listed as BPA-free and dishwasher-safe. Remember to carry a separate supply of drinking water for your dog.

A compact first aid kit

A small first aid kit can hold plasters, blister dressings and other basic supplies appropriate to your group. Carry any personal medication you need, too.

Choose a kit you understand how to use and check its contents periodically.

Before you leave home

Check your chosen car park’s location, parking information and any reported closures. Review your route and the weather forecast, and allow enough time to return before dark.

Browse our car park directory or use the interactive map to choose a starting point for your walk.
